The gonial angle is the angle at the corner of the jaw, where the vertical branch of the mandible meets the horizontal one. This measures it on both sides from a front-on photo. A true clinical measurement is taken from a lateral X-ray, so treat this as an approximation.

What moves it The sharper end of 120 to 130 degrees is what reads as a defined jaw, and that band is a published clinical norm rather than a community figure. It is also bone: nothing non-surgical changes it, and chewing devices load the masseter, which widens the lower face rather than sharpening it. The lever that does work is body fat sitting over the jaw. Surgery changes the angle itself and belongs with a maxillofacial surgeon, as an adult.

What it is

The mandible has a vertical branch running up toward the ear and a horizontal body running forward to the chin. The gonial angle is where those meet.

Orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons measure it as part of assessing facial structure, which makes it one of the community measurements with a genuine clinical existence rather than a forum origin.

The limit, stated before the number

The clinical measurement is taken from a lateral cephalogram, a standardised side X-ray. That is how the figures in the literature were produced.

This is a front-on approximation from surface landmarks on a photograph. It is systematically less reliable, it is affected by how you held your head, and soft tissue sits between the camera and the bone.

We report it because you searched for it and something will answer you. We would rather it be a page that tells you what the figure is worth.

The normal range

Adult males average about 124 degrees, with a standard deviation of 6. Adult females average about 122. Those are the Riolo cephalometric norms from the University of Michigan growth study, and they are still the reference orthodontists work to. More recent samples land in the same place, with means in the low-to-mid 120s and the usual adult band quoted as 120 to 130 degrees.

A sharper angle, toward the lower end, is what reads as a defined jaw from the front. A flatter one, toward the upper end, is associated with a longer lower face.

Two things to hold alongside that. The norms come from lateral cephalograms, so a figure measured off a photograph approximates them rather than matching them. And the band describes where the population sits, which is not the same as a number anyone should be working toward: the angle is bone, and it does not move without surgery.

Both sides, and why the difference matters more

The two angles are reported separately.

Facial asymmetry is universal, so a few degrees between your sides is ordinary and means nothing. A large gap almost always means the head was turned when the photo was taken, rather than that one side of your jaw is shaped differently.

So the difference between the two is mostly a check on the photograph. If it is large, retake it square-on before reading anything into the angles themselves.

What changes it

Nothing non-surgical. The angle is the shape of a bone.

Chewing gum and jaw exercisers do not change it. They load the masseter, which is muscle lying over the mandible. A thicker masseter widens the lower face. The bone angle underneath is untouched, and widening is generally the opposite of what people buying those devices want.

Surgery exists, it belongs in a conversation with a qualified maxillofacial surgeon who can image and examine you, and it is not a decision to make young.
