looksmaxxing

/ˈlʊksmæksɪŋ/

noun also looksmaxing

Maximizing your appearance as far as it will go. That covers sleep, skin, hair, training and style at one end, and cosmetic surgery at the other.

A cleanser tube, a wooden comb, a safety razor, a jar of moisturizer and a pair of grooming scissors laid out in a row.

What it actually involves

There is a lot to it. Which of these matters most depends on where you are starting and what you actually lack.

  1. Know your baseline

    Do this first

Work out which of these is actually your weak point before you spend anything. It is easy to pour effort into what you are already good at and leave the real problem untouched.

  2. Getting leaner

Changes your face, not just your body

If you are carrying weight, losing it does as much for your face as it does for the rest of you. Cheekbones, jawline and the eye area all sharpen as body fat comes down, and none of it requires a purchase.

  3. Hair

    Fastest visible change

A cut that suits your head shape changes an impression immediately, and it costs a conversation with a better barber. Hair loss is a medical question, and it has real treatments.

  4. Style

    Same day

Clothes that fit beat clothes that cost, and fit is the cheaper of the two to fix. A tailor costs less than a new wardrobe.

  5. Skin

    Weeks to months

A cleanser, a moisturizer and daily sunscreen. One study of 298 women put roughly 80% of visible facial aging down to sun exposure, which makes sunscreen the item on that list doing the most work.

  6. Physique

    Months, then it holds

Resistance training changes your shape, your posture and the way clothes sit on you. It is slow, it is well evidenced, and it works on a scale of months.

  7. Sleep

    Free, and it compounds

You see it in your skin, your eyes and how puffy your face looks. Nothing to buy, nothing to book, and you can start tonight.

  8. Surgery

    Depends on your baseline

The biggest changes available, and where they belong depends on where you are starting. The reversible things above are cheaper to try and possible to undo. If your bottleneck is structural, none of them will move it, and knowing that early saves years. Either way it is a conversation for a qualified surgeon, and not a decision to make young.

Frequently asked questions

What does looksmaxxing mean?

Looksmaxxing means maximizing your appearance as far as it will go. It covers sleep, skin, hair, training, style and posture at one end, and cosmetic procedures at the other. The term is short for looks plus max, and it came out of online communities in the mid-2010s.

Is looksmaxxing the same as plastic surgery?

No. Most of it is ordinary maintenance: a skincare routine, a haircut that suits your head shape, sleep, training, clothes that fit. Surgery and medical options exist, and some people choose them, but they're the far end of the range, not the definition of it.

How do you start looksmaxxing?

Work out which part is actually your weak point first, because it is easy to pour effort into what you are already good at and leave the real problem untouched. After that the cheap, reversible things are a low-risk place to start: a haircut that suits you, clothes that fit, a basic skincare routine, and losing body fat if you are carrying it.

Is looksmaxxing only for men?

No. The biggest communities are mostly men, but skin, hair, training, sleep and style are not gender-specific, and the research on appearance is not either. We run two places for women: a section inside the main community, and Beautymaxxing, a separate community on its own site.

How long does looksmaxxing take?

Different parts move on very different timelines. Grooming and clothes change things the same day. Skincare takes two to three months, which is when dermatologists reassess, because a skin cell takes about a month to reach the surface. Resistance training changes body composition over months, not weeks. Hair loss treatments are usually assessed at six months, and that is a conversation for a doctor.

What are the different categories of looksmaxxing?

It is usually split in two. Softmaxxing is everything reversible and cheap: sleep, skincare, grooming, training, posture and clothes that fit. Hardmaxxing covers the permanent and the medical, from injectables through to surgery. Which of the two matters more depends entirely on where you are starting, and working that out is the first job.

Does looksmaxxing actually work?

Yes, and the mechanisms are not mysterious. Sunscreen slows photoaging, resistance training changes body composition, and a haircut that suits your head shape changes an impression the same day. What differs between people is which of those is actually their bottleneck, and how long each takes: grooming and clothes are same-day, skin is two to three months, training is longer.
