This compares twenty paired landmarks across your face's midline and scores five feature groups out of 100: brows, eyes, nose, mouth and jaw. Symmetry is one of the better-evidenced components of facial attractiveness, and a review in Annual Review of Psychology found it attractive across cultures.

How this is worked out

  1. The midline

    An axis from the top of your face outline to the bottom of your chin. Every pair is compared against this line rather than against raw coordinates, so a head turned slightly in frame does not read as a crooked face.

  2. Twenty paired landmarks

    Grouped into brows, eyes, nose, mouth and jaw. Each pair should sit equal distances either side of the midline, and the score is how close they come.

  3. Per-group scores

    Reported separately as well as combined, because the group scores tell you where the asymmetry is, which the total cannot.

What each measurement is

Reference bands are this tool's own, chosen for the landmarks it uses. Where research reports a figure it is given separately, with the source, because the two are different claims. And each one says what actually moves it, which for most facial measurements is the more useful half.

What moves it Aim at the photograph before you aim at your face. A score below the eighties here almost always means the head was turned, and a straight-on shot of an ordinary face lands in the nineties. Of the asymmetry that is real, the postural, dental and muscular kinds can be addressed by a physiotherapist, dentist or orthodontist; the skeletal kind does not move. Facial exercises marketed for symmetry have no evidence behind them, which is worth knowing before a year goes into them.

Symmetry is one of the few measurements in looksmaxxing where the research is genuinely strong, so it is worth stating plainly before the caveats.

What the research found

Rhodes reviewed the field in Annual Review of Psychology in 2006, combining a critical review with meta-analyses. The conclusion: averageness, symmetry and sexual dimorphism are all attractive, in both male and female faces, and across cultures.

She also noted that preferences appear early in development and that cross-cultural agreement undercuts the idea that beauty standards are purely arbitrary cultural inventions.

That is a top-tier journal and a review rather than a single study, which is why symmetry carries the heaviest weight in our attractiveness test. The weights there follow the evidence grading rather than tradition.

The honest follow-up belongs next to it: a population-level effect is not a prediction about one person, and Rhodes does not claim otherwise.

Nobody is symmetrical

This is the part most symmetry tools leave out.

Facial asymmetry is universal. Everyone has it, most of it is invisible at conversational distance, and a tool that finds some in your face is working rather than diagnosing.

Mirrored composites are misleading and this tool deliberately does not use them. Doubling one side of a face doubles every difference simultaneously, and the result looks strange even for people whose faces do not. It is a party trick that reliably makes ordinary faces look wrong, which is a poor foundation for a measurement.

Why the midline matters, and what it protects you from

Every pair here is compared against an axis running from the top of your face to your chin, rather than against raw coordinates.

That choice has a consequence worth knowing: a head turned slightly in frame reads as less asymmetric than a naive measurement would make it. The tool under-reports rather than over-reports.

That is the failure worth having. This returns a number about a photograph, and a photograph taken at a slight angle should not be allowed to tell somebody their face is crooked.

It does not remove the problem entirely. Rotation is still the single biggest cause of a low score, so if one group comes back far below the others, retake the photo square-on before believing it.

What moves and what does not

  • Postural and dental asymmetry can shift, and a dentist, orthodontist or physiotherapist is the right person to look at those.
  • Skeletal asymmetry does not change without surgery, which is an adult decision for a qualified surgeon with real risks attached.
  • Exercises marketed for facial symmetry do not have evidence behind them, and saying so is cheaper than finding out over a year.

How symmetrical is my face?

This scores it out of 100 across five feature groups. Bear in mind that nobody is perfectly symmetrical and a score in the high nineties is already unusual, mostly because photography introduces error of its own.

Does facial symmetry actually matter?

It is one of the better-evidenced parts of this field. Rhodes reviewed the literature in Annual Review of Psychology and found symmetry, averageness and sexual dimorphism all attractive in both sexes and across cultures.

Is anyone perfectly symmetrical?

No. Asymmetry is universal and largely invisible at normal conversational distance. A measurement that finds it is working correctly, not finding a problem.

Why is my symmetry score low?

Check the photo first. Head rotation is the biggest single cause of a low score, and it is also the easiest to fix. If one feature group is far below the others, that pattern usually points at the camera.

Can you improve facial symmetry?

Some asymmetry is postural, dental or muscular and a professional can address those. Most of it is skeletal and does not change. Exercises marketed for it do not have evidence behind them.

Does chewing on one side cause asymmetry?

Chewing loads the masseter, and a muscle worked harder on one side can grow thicker on that side, so a visible difference is plausible. What we have not found is a study measuring how much. A dentist who can look at you is better placed than a calculator here.

What is a good symmetry score?

Does symmetry change with age?

Soft tissue changes over a lifetime and sun exposure is unevenly distributed, so some drift is expected. We do not have a vetted figure for how much.
