Measure your shoulders
Stand relaxed with your arms at your sides. Run a tape all the way around your torso at the widest point of your deltoids, keeping it level.

Put the tape around your navel. Stand normally, breathe out, and read the tape without bracing or pulling your stomach in.

Divide the shoulder figure by the waist figure. Both must be in the same unit, and the result has no unit of its own.

How this is worked out
Shoulder circumference
All the way around your torso at the widest point of the deltoids, arms hanging at your sides. Around, not across. A straight-line width across the front gives a different number and is harder to repeat.
Waist circumference
Around the navel, standing relaxed, at the end of a normal breath out. Not braced, not sucked in, and not at the narrowest point, which moves as your body fat changes and makes one month impossible to compare with the next.

The waist is the half that moves. Shoulder width is mostly clavicle, which is fixed once you have finished growing, so this is the figure that is actually in reach.
What moves it No study names a target here. Maisey measured waist-to-chest and Hughes and Gallup measured shoulder-to-hip, and across the range they sampled more wedge-shaped rated higher throughout without a point where it stopped. So this is a waypoint, not a finishing line, and it is the one most people can reach by working on the waist alone.
Your shoulder-to-waist ratio is one number describing how wedge-shaped your
torso is. It’s shoulder circumference divided by waist circumference, and it’s
one of the few things in looksmaxxing where the research is genuinely solid and
the popular version of it is genuinely wrong.
Both halves of that are worth your time. The effect is real, it replicates, and
it’s bigger than people expect. The specific number everyone quotes at you has
nothing behind it at all.
What the research found
Two studies carry this, and they’re worth reading carefully because the
category consistently garbles them.
Maisey and colleagues, in The Lancet, 1999. They found waist-to-chest ratio
was the primary determinant of how women rated male bodily attractiveness. It
beat waist-to-hip ratio. It beat body mass. That’s a strong finding in a
top-tier journal, and it’s worth saying plainly rather than hedging.
Hughes and Gallup, in Evolution and Human Behavior, 2003. They measured
shoulder-to-hip ratio and found men with more wedge-shaped torsos were rated
more facially attractive too. Facial attractiveness ratings accounted for over
25% of the variance in body shape, which is a striking amount for two things
that seem unrelated.
Grade both as single studies. Maisey is a one-page research letter rather than a
full paper. Hughes and Gallup sampled college students. Neither is a
meta-analysis, and we’d rather tell you that than let you build a plan on more
certainty than exists.
The part nobody gets right
Read what each study measured. One compared waist against chest. The other
compared shoulders against hips.
Neither of them measured shoulders against waist.
That’s the ratio this calculator returns, because it’s the one a tape measure
gives you most easily and the one everyone searches for. All three describe the
same wedge. The direction of the finding carries across. The actual figures do
not, and anyone quoting a study to justify a shoulder-to-waist target is
quoting a paper that measured something else.
Why 1.618 is not a target
The figure you’ve seen is 1.618, usually called the Adonis index. It comes from
fitness culture, which took it from the facial golden-ratio claim, which is
itself poorly supported in the literature.
No study reports 1.618 as a measured optimum for the male torso. What the
studies report is a slope: across the range they sampled, more wedge-shaped
rated higher. They don’t identify a point where that stops, and they don’t
identify a figure to reach.
This matters practically, not just pedantically. A target tells you that you
have failed until you hit it. A direction tells you which way to work, which is
the useful version and the true one.
What actually moves the number
The two halves of this ratio move at completely different speeds, and knowing
which is which saves you a year.
The waist is the fast half. Waist circumference tracks body fat closely, and
body fat responds to a calorie deficit in weeks. Somebody who drops from 20% to
14% body fat will see their ratio change faster than somebody who trains
shoulders hard for a year. If you want the number to move, this is where it
moves.
The shoulders are the slow half. Clavicle length is fixed once you’ve
finished growing, and that sets the width of the frame. Deltoid mass is not
fixed, and it’s the part that actually shows, but building visible width takes
years rather than months. It’s worth starting. It isn’t worth waiting for.
The order is the useful thing here. Both are worth doing. Only one of them
pays this quarter, and it’s the one people skip because the other is more fun.
How to measure so the number means something
The ratio is only useful if this month’s figure is comparable with last
month’s. That makes consistency more valuable than precision.
Shoulders, around. Arms relaxed at your sides, tape all the way around your
torso at the widest point of the deltoids, kept level front to back. Around
rather than across: a straight-line width is a real measurement but it’s very
hard to take on yourself the same way twice.
Waist, at the navel. Standing normally, at the end of a normal breath out.
Not braced and not pulled in. Measure at the navel rather than at the narrowest
point, because the narrowest point migrates as your body fat changes and turns
a fixed landmark into a moving one.
Same time of day, same conditions. Waist circumference varies by a couple of
centimeters across a day depending on food and water. Measuring first thing
removes most of that.
What this number cannot tell you
It describes a proportion. It doesn’t describe you.
It says nothing about your body fat, which is a separate measurement with a
separate method. Two people can share a ratio at very different compositions,
and if that’s what you’re after, the body fat estimate uses
a published circumference method instead.
It also has nothing to say about how any individual person will read your
appearance. The research describes averages across groups of raters. An average
is a real thing and it’s worth knowing, and it is still not a prediction about
you.
